MENG 585/585D (Graduate-Faculty Seminar)

Research guide with information and tips for MENG 585/585D students

How do I organize my literature review?

Like any academic paper, a literature review will have three basic components:

  1. Introduction: introduce the topic of the literature review, including the review's organizational pattern or central theme (are you discussing the research chronologically, thematically, or methodologically? Be sure to tell your reader.)
  2. Body: the meat of the literature review. This is where you will discuss your sources.
  3. Conclusion: present what you have learned from reviewing the literature so far. How might you contribute something new to the field?
