Information on Skeen Library's Engage the World series

Overview

In February 2020, Dr. David Cox (Director of Skeen Library and OSL at NMT), led a lively discussion on information literacy within a world where we have become accustomed to being able to immediately find information that suits a particular narrative.

Information Literacy: What Does it Mean in Our Culture of Blogs, Tweets, and Secondary Orality?

Isaac Asimov quipped, "There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."

Come interact with Dr. Cox as we discuss the concept of Information Literacy in a world dominated by Data Immediacy. How do we create Authority based on Knowledge--something essential in Academics and Science--within a world dominated by the deification of personal opinion?
